While Cyprus’ annual inflation rate moved up to +2.8% in April, following a quiet winter where rates sat at +1.2% in March and +0.1% in February, there is encouraging news for household budgets. The Consumer Protection Service confirmed that retail prices have successfully moderated and leveled off over the last two months, successfully absorbing the initial shock of recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Furthermore, out of the 250 everyday essentials tracked daily across 400 supermarkets, bakeries, and kiosks island wide, a significant majority of grocery categories actually saw their prices drop from March to April.

A Closer Look at the Shopping Cart

The primary upward driver came from the energy sector, with petroleum products increasing by 18.3% compared to last year (and 12.6% month on month). However, families received a major financial cushion directly from their utility bills, as the electricity and water category dropped by a refreshing 8.0% year on year.

For everyday grocery runs, the state’s weighted price index showed excellent opportunities for savings as price drops heavily outnumbered price increases:

  • Where Prices Fell (31 Categories): Smart shoppers saw substantial relief on dairy, produce, and cooking staples. Cheeses dropped by 16.7%, fresh vegetables and herbs fell by 14.0%, evaporated milk decreased by 7.9%, and vegetable oils dipped by 16.1%.

  • Where Prices Rose (13 Categories): Upward movement was mostly contained to seafood and household supplies, with frozen shellfish increasing by 13.4%, fresh fish up by 8.8%, and laundry detergents ticking up by 4.3%.

Maximizing Savings with e-Kalathi

To help consumers navigate these shifts, the government’s digital price-matching platform, ‘e-kalathi,’ ran its mid-month audit of 257 identical household products across seven major supermarket chains.

The good news for consumers is that the price gap between competing stores is narrowing. The difference between the highest priced basket and the lowest priced basket dropped to 12% (€119.70), down from a wider gap of €122.42 the previous month. This tightening market means overall retail competition is working in the consumer’s favor.

The Consumer Protection Service is warmly encouraging citizens to download and use the official e-kalathi mobile app, noting that actively utilizing these digital price comparison tools is an easy, highly effective way to trim household expenses and lock in the best local deals.
