Local authorities in Amathus have expressed strong reservations regarding the central government’s recent decision to authorize a major new mall development, reiterating that critical public infrastructure must be secured before large scale commercial ventures open.
In a formal announcement, the Municipality of Amathus and Mayor Kyriakos Xidias clarified that their long standing position remains unchanged: real estate expansion should not outpace the development of essential public works. The municipality noted that the Council of Ministers’ rapid approval of the project unfortunately validates the community and traffic concerns local officials have raised for several consecutive months.
Prioritizing Local Traffic Solutions and Quality of Life
Local officials emphasized that their stance is not an objection to economic growth or private investments, which they welcome for their capacity to create jobs and strengthen the economy. Instead, the focus is on maintaining a high quality of life for the area’s residents.
During public consultations dating back to October 2025, the municipality proactively submitted comprehensive planning solutions to address the region’s existing road challenges. The city’s core arguments center on the following principles:
-
Synchronized Infrastructure: Major commercial hubs should only move forward if corresponding traffic management infrastructure is built either beforehand or simultaneously.
-
Consideration of Local Input: Local councils are directly responsible for managing the day to day community impacts of large projects, making their practical feedback vital during the state’s decision making process.
-
Proactive Planning: Addressing heavy traffic congestion promptly avoids adding daily stress and commute delays for thousands of citizens.
A Call for State Accountability
The municipality explicitly stated that private developers and entrepreneurs should not be faulted for the current situation. The responsibility for strategic urban planning and the execution of major public roadworks rests entirely with the state, rather than the businesses investing in the area.
Furthermore, local leadership pointed out a logistical paradox in the current system: while large commercial approval processes are frequently accelerated, essential public works intended to alleviate traffic and enhance civic life face multi-year delays.
Moving forward, the Amathus Municipality affirmed its commitment to advocating for the infrastructure resources the region requires, stressing that sustainable urban growth depends on a fundamental shift toward proactive state-level planning.
