The Cyprus government is placing significant emphasis on improving care for the elderly, acknowledging both the advantages of increased life expectancy and the challenges it presents. Speaking on behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides at the “Walking with the Elderly” march in Foini, Deputy Welfare Minister Marilena Evangelou highlighted the importance of adapting to longer lifespans.

Evangelou attributed the growing number of healthy and active older adults to advances in medical science and public health, which have enabled them to continue contributing to society. She emphasized, “As life expectancy increases, it is essential for societies to adjust to these changes.” As part of this effort, the inclusion of older adults is integrated into all government policies.

One of the key initiatives currently underway is the development of a National Strategy and National Action Plan on Active Ageing, which Evangelou is spearheading. The strategy has already received approval from the Council of Ministers and focuses on promoting the well-being and active participation of the elderly in Cypriot society.

In addition, Evangelou announced the submission of a Plan for Accommodation and Care in Homes for the Elderly to the Council of Ministers. This plan aims to expand capacity in care homes and increase the number of elderly individuals receiving long-term care services. Upgrading the quality of services provided in these facilities is also a priority.

She stressed the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the lives of the elderly, stating, “The Christodoulides administration is focused on elderly-related issues, with the Deputy Welfare Ministry continually developing policies and actions to ensure a safe and healthy environment for older adults.”

Evangelou concluded by underscoring the importance of keeping the elderly active and engaged, describing them as a “sensitive and respected” segment of society. “They lived through tough times and built a better future for younger generations. We owe them a great deal,” she said.
