Nicosia has launched an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming the city into a ’15-minute city’ by 2030, ensuring that residents can reach essential services within a short walk or bike ride from their homes. This plan, announced on Monday, targets reducing the reliance on cars and promoting more sustainable, accessible urban living.
According to Philenews, the city-wide strategy focuses on improving public transport, expanding cycling routes, and managing parking in both central and surrounding areas. The ultimate goal is to make everyday necessities like shopping, education, and work more accessible to residents through walking or cycling.
Key Areas of Focus
The initiative includes interventions in Nicosia’s commercial and historical centers, as well as nearby municipalities such as Lakatamia, Agioi Omologites, Agios Dometios, Aglantzia, and Strovolos. One of the major proposals is to reduce speed limits to 30 km/h in selected areas, particularly in city centers and historic districts, to promote walking and cycling by curbing the current speeds, which can reach up to 70 km/h on some main roads.
Development Projects by 2030
Nine significant development projects are slated for completion by 2030. These include the renovation of the old GSP Stadium, the creation of the mixed-use Landmark development, and the construction of a new Archaeological Museum. Other upcoming projects feature a new JUMBO hypermarket in Strovolos, government offices, and land developments spearheaded by Kykkos Monastery and IT company Logicom.
These efforts aim to integrate public green spaces and improve community facilities, alongside enhancements to the city’s public transport system, fostering a more sustainable and convenient lifestyle for Nicosia’s residents.
