The University of Cyprus (UCY) has achieved recognition in eight distinct scientific fields in the 2024 Global Rankings of Academic Subjects by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.
These areas of excellence include Automation & Control, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Psychology, Environmental Science & Engineering, Political Science, Physics, Computer Science & Engineering, and Clinical Medicine.
A statement from UCY highlights its status as the only Cypriot institution listed among the top 701-800 universities globally, as per the Shanghai Global Ranking released in August 2024.
“The subject rankings further underscore UCY’s dedication to achieving global recognition in research and education. Excellence, impactful research, and high-quality teaching remain the cornerstones of Cyprus’ first public university,” the press release noted.
The university emphasized that this achievement showcases its potential for further international acclaim. It also reinforces the importance of legislative changes that could drive institutional growth, such as enabling undergraduate programs in foreign languages and establishing university-operated clinics.
The rankings encompass five scientific categories—sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and social sciences—divided into 55 specialized fields. To qualify for a subject ranking, universities must meet minimum publication thresholds, which vary by discipline from 25 to 200 publications.

World-Class Researchers and Research Excellence
The rankings use weighted models to assess performance across these criteria, generating a unique score for each subject and institution.
