The European Commission has approved a financial package of €39.5 million for 2024 aimed at aiding the Turkish Cypriot community and advancing efforts toward the reunification of Cyprus.

The funds will be directed toward several major initiatives, including the Halloumi/Hellim Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) project. This program marks the first time Turkish Cypriot producers can benefit from EU protection for their Halloumi cheese, which is expected to enhance trade across the Green Line that separates the island.

A key focus of this funding is helping Turkish Cypriot producers align with EU food safety and health standards, enabling them to sell their products within the EU market. Grants will be made available to dairy and agricultural businesses to ensure compliance with these standards and facilitate cross-border trade.

As part of the EU Green Deal, the funding also earmarks resources for a potential joint solar power plant, contingent on an agreement between both communities. This project would foster collaboration on sustainable energy.

The program further supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs, provides technical assistance in the education sector, and equips schools with resources to enhance lifelong learning and special education services.

A notable portion of the funding will be dedicated to a bicommunal scholarship program, enabling Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot students to attend international baccalaureate programs at schools with a focus on peace-building.

Additionally, the initiative will continue to back the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus and the restoration of the island’s cultural heritage, promoting reconciliation and respect for its diverse traditions and religions.

Since 2006, the European Union has contributed €728 million through its Aid Programme, managed by the Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support, for similar efforts in Cyprus.
